Year 6

Welcome to Year 6

Sharna Jackson Class

High Rise Mystery with Sharna Jackson - Literature Wales

Her High-Rise Mystery series introduces Nik and Norva, two sisters who solve crimes in their London community, blending clever detective work with relatable characters and exciting plots. Jackson’s writing has been praised for its energy, inclusivity, and ability to spark curiosity in children who might not always see themselves reflected in books. She has also written The Good Turn and Peak Peril, both of which continue her mission to engage young people with thrilling adventures while encouraging them to think critically and creatively.

For pupils, Sharna Jackson’s books are not only fun to read but also empowering. Her stories show that young people can be brave, resourceful, and make a difference in their communities. By weaving together gripping mysteries with diverse voices, she helps children fall in love with reading while opening doors to new perspectives and possibilities.

Malorie Blackman Class

Amazing Authors - Malorie Blackman - CBBC - BBC

Malorie Blackman has been chosen as our class author because of her incredible talent for writing stories that both excite and inspire young readers.

She has written over 60 books, including Pig Heart Boy, a gripping and thought-provoking novel that explores courage, friendship, and the challenges of growing up. Blackman’s ability to tackle important themes in ways that children can relate to makes her one of Britain’s most brilliant authors. Her work encourages pupils to think deeply, empathise with others, and enjoy the power of storytelling. By selecting Malorie Blackman as our class author, we are celebrating her outstanding contribution to children’s literature and giving our pupils the chance to learn from her creativity and imagination.

Our Curriculum

At Queensmead Primary Academy, our Year 6 curriculum is designed to inspire curiosity, creativity, and a deeper understanding of the world. In the first half of the autumn term, children explore the theme Knowing Me, Knowing You, focusing on the science topic Animals Including Humans, alongside celebrating Black History Month with studies of the American civil rights movement and British Black heroes. The second half term continues with the science theme Our Living World, investigating animals, living things, and their habitats, while also learning about the events and impact of World War I. In spring, pupils engage with the theme Right to Fight, examining the impact of World War II, followed by a creative unit on The Art of Animation, where they discover different types of animation and gain hands-on practical experience. Summer begins with Our Colourful Cultures, a vibrant exploration of East Asia’s culture, geography, food, and arts, before concluding the year with a geography topic on mountains, encouraging pupils to understand physical landscapes and their significance. This rich and varied curriculum ensures our Year 6 learners leave Queensmead Primary Academy with a strong foundation of knowledge, creativity, and global awareness.
