Year 4 Multiplication Tables Check (MTC)

As many of you will be aware, the National Curriculum states that all children should be confident with times tables up to 12x12 by the end of Year 4. Rapid recall of these facts gives children an excellent foundation for future mathematics.

In 2019, Queensmead Primary Academy took part in a national pilot for the Multiplication Tables Check (MTC). This check involved all Year 4 children taking a five-minute, online quiz to assess their confidence in recalling and using these times tables.

Current Year 4 Children

The current Year 4 children will complete the check this year during the week beginning Monday 7th June 2021. It will be done in small groups on laptops and will take approximately five minutes. The outcome of the check should inform both us as a school and you as parents as to where each child is in terms of times tables. We can then celebrate their successes and work together to identify and address any gaps.

What can you do?

Please regularly quiz your children on times table recall. There are also lots of online apps, card games and puzzles widely available to support children to learn their tables in a fun and engaging way, such as times table bingo or snap. Crucially, we also ask that you encourage your Year 4 child to use their online TTRockstars account as often as possible – it has an excellent track record for improving times table recall and is great fun! Children can earn coins (for their online Rockstar avatar) by practising in any of the single- or multi-player games. One of the excellent features of TTRockstars is the ‘Sound Check’ game (set up in the same way as the MTC). Practising via ‘Sound Check’ will help children to prepare for the MTC.

TTRockstars Login Details

All children were given TTRockstars login details at the start of the academic year. If you need your child’s TTRockstars login details again, please do not hesitate to contact the school office as soon as possible.

Laptops

If your child does not have access to a laptop or similar device at home, we do have a small number of laptops available for hire. For further information, please contact the school office.
